The Yaysmawurk‘ is a liturgical collection of brief saints’ lives arranged according to the day on which they were celebrated in the annual church calendar. The name comes from the first words of most of the daily entries: Y-aysm awur, that is, “On this day . . .” The collection was part of the great and varied Armenian liturgical tradition from the turn of the first millennium. The first Yaysmawurk‘ was translated from an existing Greek liturgical collection (the Synaxarion, “where the lives are all collected”). In fact, it is common knowledge that this Greek collection was the basis for nearly all such liturgical collections of the lives of the saints throughout the early Christian world. However, it was not a mere translation. Rather, it constituted a logical culmination of a long and steady development in the Armenian Church of what scholars today like to call the cult of the saints.

Après avoir traqué diables et démons dans les moindres recoins de la cathédrale de Chartres, Marie-Francine Jourdan s attache ici à nous faire découvrir, dans leur gloire comme dans leur modeste souvenir, les saints qui ont marqué l histoire du diocèse de Chartres, bien au-delà de la seule cathédrale, dans les domaines de l art, de la spiritualité et des traditions, qu elles soient d origine populaire ou ecclésiale. Dans la démarche qu elle a retenue, Marie-Francine Jourdan distingue trois phases successives : le temps des martyrs et des évangélisateurs, le temps des fondateurs : évêques et abbés, enfin le temps d une sainteté difficile : le deuxième millénaire. Ces trois moments de l approche de la sainteté à travers culte, biographie, iconographie circonscrivent, sans les épuiser, les différents champs d étude de la riche diversité des saints chartrains et leur active présence dans la vie de la cité Carnute au fil des siècles. Ils sont les marqueurs de son histoire, les références de sa conscience et de son identité (extraits de la préface)
